Why would people dislike religion in public spaces?

Well, if the people preaching on street corners could be polite about it, I doubt I'd have a problem. However, in the public arena some religious people tend to promote their religion by putting others down. I also don't like to see one religion favored over another. I guess if individuals want to preach, fine. Just be willing to walk away when told someone is not interested.
